Lope Caballero

Brief Biography

Lope Caballero was born in Lugo in the modern province of Lugo. His father was Juan Cavallero and his mother was Mari Hernández. He arrived in New Spain around 1537. Documentary records indicate that Lope Caballero married a Native woman who accompanied him on the Expedition. He also had two sons, but whether they were born during the Expedition is not known. Lope Caballero stated that he wrote about the Expedition during his time in Tierra Nueva, but his writings have not come to light. He was not present at the 1540 muster. Following his return he was a tailor in Puebla.
