Martín Xalacate, indio

Brief Biography

The indios amigos were not listed on the 1540 muster but many were present. They also rarely appear as individuals in the documentary record. Luckily, several served as witnesses after the Expedition returned to New Spain. Martín Xalacate testified that he went on the expedition and that he was a principal in Mexico City, which suggests that he commanded at least some of the indios amigos.
