fray Juan de Padilla

Brief Biography

The Franciscan, fray Juan de Padilla, was an early resident of New Spain. Prior to the Expedition, he was mainly in western Mexico. Although he and the other religious were not listed on the 1540 muster, it is highly likely that they were present for it. When the decision was made that the Expedition would return to New Spain, fray Juan remained behind to preach to the Natives. With a few Black servants, converted Natives, and at least one Spaniard, Andrés de Campo, he returned to Quivira. He was killed there shortly afterwards.
